Organization Overview
Organization Overview
HALO Flight is a nonprofit helicopter air ambulance provider headquartered in Corpus Christi, Texas. Since 1987, HALO has grown from a single-aircraft, single-pilot operation into a vital regional air medical service with three bases (Corpus Christi, Beeville, and Alice), six BH407GXi helicopters and more than 50 employees. The organization covers a significant portion of South Texas - from the Mexican border to Austin and from Laredo to Galveston - providing life-saving transport with speed and precision.
The Challenge
The Challenge
Before adopting a digital solution, HALO’s operations were entirely paper-based. Tasks such as flight planning, scheduling, compliance documentation and maintenance tracking were manual, time-consuming and prone to delays.
“We needed to refine our operations to become more efficient and allow for a faster way to meet the regulatory requirements of Part 135 HAA operations,” said Michael J. Lopez, Director of Operations.
As the organization expanded, so did its need for a more integrated, streamlined system - one that could reduce administrative burden and enhance real-time communication across teams.
The Solution: Vellox’s Operations Platform
The Solution: Vellox’s Operations Platform
The operations platform - now part of the Vellox Group - was first implemented at HALO prior to Michael J. Lopez’s tenure. At that time, its usage was limited mainly to pilots and dispatchers. However, recognizing its broader potential, Lopez led a company-wide expansion of the platform’s capabilities.
“After exposure to the platform, I realized we were only utilizing about 10% of its capability. With support from the team, we’ve expanded to about 90% of the features relevant to our operations.”
Today, the platform is fully integrated into HALO’s daily workflow, supporting:
- Flight planning and dispatch
- Risk and duty assessments
- Weight and balance calculations
- Scheduling and maintenance tracking
- Document management and compliance reporting
- Integration with other systems to create a seamless digital ecosystem.

Implementation and Adoption
Implementation and Adoption
Although the original rollout of the platform predates Lopez, he has taken a proactive role in expanding and managing it.
“I am the primary administrator of the platform for the company and make all the changes and updates to our current processes,” he explained.
Thanks to its flexibility and in-built customization tools, HALO has tailored the platform without frequent reliance on external support.
“Seldom do I have to contact product support. Most customization options are already built in and easy to implement.”

Results and Benefits
Results and Benefits
“Efficiency is the #1 benefit for us, followed by ease of use,” Lopez emphasized.
Key outcomes include:
- Rapid response capability: Dispatchers send flight requests directly to pilots’ EFBs. Pilots complete risk assessments and return them within seconds.
- Streamlined flight planning: Complete Flight continuously tracks pilot data in real time, automatically updating currency status, monitoring duty and rest limits, and supporting compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Automated maintenance updates: Maintenance data from closed manifests syncs directly with other flight docs systems, eliminating manual entry.
- Enhanced reporting: The platform offers robust reporting tools to support flight analysis, duty tracking, and maintenance forecasting, helping teams make informed operational decisions.

What Stood out Most
What Stood out Most
For Lopez, one feature above all stands out:
“As an administrator, I really like how customizable the product is. That gives us a huge advantage because we can adapt quickly without waiting on external changes.”
The platform’s intuitive design and adaptability have allowed HALO to evolve with its mission - without being constrained by software limitations.
Looking Ahead
Looking Ahead
With the Vellox platform at the core of HALO’s operations, the organization is positioned for continued growth, regulatory agility, and excellence in emergency response. The shift from paper-based workflows to an integrated digital system has transformed how HALO approaches its life-saving mission.
